An equation is a balance. Adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing both sides by the same allowed value keeps it balanced. First undo addition or subtraction, then multiplication or division.
Worked example: Solve 3x + 4 = 19.
Subtract 4 from both sides: 3x = 15.
Divide both sides by 3: x = 5.
Check in the original equation: 3 × 5 + 4 = 19.
