One idea to remember

To solve a factorisable quadratic, write it as a product equal to zero. At least one factor must then be zero. Always check that your solutions satisfy the original equation.

Worked example: Solve x² − 5x + 6 = 0.

  1. Find two numbers with product 6 and sum −5: −2 and −3.
  2. Factorise: (x − 2)(x − 3) = 0.
  3. Therefore x = 2 or x = 3. Both make the original expression zero.

Your turn

Write your method before opening the answer. These original questions are for practice, not official past-exam papers.

1. Solve x² − 9x + 20 = 0.

Show answer & explanation

x = 4, 5

The numbers −4 and −5 have sum −9 and product 20. So (x − 4)(x − 5) = 0, giving 4 and 5.

2. Find the sum of the first 10 terms of 2, 5, 8, …

Show answer & explanation

155

Sₙ = n/2 × [2a + (n − 1)d]. Here S₁₀ = 5 × [4 + 27] = 155.
