One idea to remember

Equivalent fractions represent the same amount. Multiply or divide both the numerator and denominator by the same non-zero number. To add fractions, first make their denominators equal.

Worked example: Add 2/3 and 1/6.

  1. Use the common denominator 6.
  2. 2/3 = 4/6 because both numerator and denominator are multiplied by 2.
  3. 4/6 + 1/6 = 5/6. Add the numerators, keeping the common denominator.

Your turn

Write your method before opening the answer. These original questions are for practice, not official past-exam papers.

1. Calculate 5/6 − 1/3.

Show answer & explanation

1/2

1/3 = 2/6, so 5/6 − 2/6 = 3/6 = 1/2.

2. A square has side 7 cm. What is its area?

Show answer & explanation

49 cm²

Area = side × side = 7 × 7 = 49 cm². Perimeter would be 28 cm.
